Club
The Santo da Serra Golf Club overlooks the bay of Machico, the location where the island discoverers boarded the island.
The original course, built in 1937, was redesigned in 1991 by the renowned golf architect Robert Trent Jones Sr., who crafted a spectacular and completely new 27-hole course amidst some of the most beautiful natural scenery.
Holes 3 and 4 of the Machico course are the hallmark, becoming memorable for those who play here.
The Machico and Desertas courses are the ones played by professionals in the Madeira Islands Open, which is part of the PGA European Tour. The Serras course is a pleasant alternative featuring lakes, mountain views, and flat terrain.
Each hole offers four tee options, allowing players to choose the level of difficulty they prefer – whether a more relaxed game or a challenge at a professional level.
Golf stars, including many Ryder Cup players, have attested to the excellent quality of the fairways and greens. The semi-roughs and roughs showcase the meticulous work and attention dedicated to the course conditions.
The course is a true botanical garden, adorned with four beautiful lakes and panoramic views.
The Santo da Serra Golf Club provides its visitors with extensive and varied facilities, such as a comfortable clubhouse with a panoramic restaurant, and a terrace with stunning views. “Una Clubhouse muy bonita” is how Seve Ballesteros described it in 2001 when he participated in the Madeira Islands Open.
The training facility is equipped with an excellent practice area, with two putting-greens, a chipping green, a bunker green, and a three-tier driving range, one of which is covered. The pro-shop offers the latest golf collections as well as rental equipment: full sets, trolleys, and buggies.
The Golf Academy offers technical training by a highly qualified professional with individual or group lessons.
It is located five minutes from the modern expressway that connects Funchal to the airport, thus allowing one to reach the city of Funchal in 15 minutes.
Santo da Serra is ranked as the 12th best golf course of the 75 in Portugal.
